VfL Wolfsburg Women earned a 2-0 victory over FC Bayern Munich at the Volkswagen Arena in October last year, and they return to the same venue on Sunday for their next crunch league match when they take on Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 15 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga season (kick-off 16:45 CET). With the Green-and-Whites currently three points behind their visitors this weekend, the match represents an opportunity to pull level at the top.
At his pre-match press conference, head coach Tommy Stroot spoke about…
…team news: “Kristin Demann and Camilla Küver are still building up their fitness. In theory, Luca Papp is available again, but given all of our options right now she probably won’t be in the squad for Frankfurt. Merle Frohms hasn’t been able to take part in any training sessions yet, so we’ll wait and see how things look tomorrow.”
…the atmosphere in the team: “We obviously returned home from Hoffenheim feeling frustrated, which is something everyone has had to deal with as best they can. With that in mind, we’ve had a couple of chats to get us focused on the Eintracht game. I liked the reaction I’ve seen in the training session yesterday for players who didn’t start our last game, as well as during our recovery sessions and in the conversations we’ve had.”
…Frankfurt’s impressive league performances: “That’s come as no surprise to me. Far more surprising is the fact that in recent years Frankfurt haven’t been in the mix at the top in the way they are now. They’ve managed to maintain the quality and stability in their squad in recent years. And given that they’re not playing in the Champions League at the moment, they’re in a situation where they can be dangerous – and they are dangerous. The teams not in the Champions League right now just have that extra bit of energy in certain moments. With that in mind, I’m glad that both teams are coming into the game in the same situation given that we both had DFB Cup fixtures during the week.”
…how things stand: “We know Frankfurt have three points more than us and a better goal difference at the moment. So we’re determined to win this game. We know all about how awkward Frankfurt are to play against, how good they are in transition and the momentum they can generate from the reverse fixture. But we’re also aware that if we play our game and show our qualities out on the pitch, then we’re capable of winning.”
