Goeßling extends contract

Lena Goeßling will stay at VfL Wolfsburg Ladies until at least 2021.

One of the best-known figures in German women's football and a key player in VfL Wolfsburg Ladies' recent success, Goeßling has put pen to paper on a new contract that will keep her at the club until 2021.

"Lena has not only been involved in every trophy win since joining us in 2011, but she's also an important leader who fully identifies with VfL Wolfsburg," said Ralf Kellermann, sporting director of VfL Wolfsburg Ladies. "We're therefore delighted that Lena has chosen to wear the VfL shirt for another two seasons. With a view to Nilla Fischer's departure, it's important to have someone like Lena with international experience in the team who can take on the responsibility."

A trophy-laden spell

Bielefeld native Goeßling, who began her football career at SV Löhne-Obernbeck, joined Wolfsburg in 2011 from SC 07 Bad Neuenahr. During her time at the club she has won the UEFA Women's Champions League twice, the German title four times and the DFB Cup on five occasions.
The 32-year-old has also tasted success with Germany, who she has represented 103 times since 2008. She was part of the side that won Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 as well as the 2013 UEFA Women's EURO in Sweden, where Goeßling was named in the All-Star Team. Goeßling came second in the vote for the European Women's Footballer of the Year award in 2013.

The midfielder has made 129 appearances for VfL in the Allianz Women's Bundesliga, scoring 23 goals, as well as making 35 appearances (one goal) in the Champions League and 21 (four goals) in the DFB Cup.

"Journey isn't over yet"

"I'm very thankful that I'll be playing for VfL Wolfsburg for another two years," said Goeßling. "Since joining in 2011, we've achieved a lot together and I'm certain our journey isn't over yet. There's huge potential in the current side and I'm very motivated to help us achieve our aims with my experience."

The Germany international becomes the fifth player to have committed her future to the club in recent weeks, with Lara Dickenmann, Claudia Neto, Alexandra Popp and Ewa Pajor all penning new deals.
