Goals guaranteed

All you need to know ahead of the match against Bayern Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg Spieler Maximilian Arnold erspielt sich im Zweikampf mit einem Gegner aus Bayern den Ball.

FC Bayern had their latest league title in the bag by Matchday 31 this season, while a 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart a week later guaranteed VfL’s Bundesliga spot for another year. Nevertheless, the match at the Volkswagen Arena is a sell-out and kicks off at 15:30 CEST on Saturday afternoon. VfL are unbeaten in three, but on the flip side they have gone 15 games against Bayern without a win.

More facts and figures

Winless since the title: Victory over Wolfsburg would take Bayern to 79 points – one more than last year when they also won the league. They have looked shaky at the back in recent games, however, with a loss against Mainz two weeks ago followed by a 2-2 draw with Stuttgart last time out.

Top scorer – again: Robert Lewandowski is currently on 34 league goals for the season and is all but guaranteed to be Bundesliga top scorer for the seventh time overall and the fifth campaign in a row. The Wolves also happen to be the 33-year-old Polish striker’s favourite opponent, with 24 goals to his name against them in 21 Bundesliga matches.

Goals galore: Wolfsburg versus Bayern is always good for a goal or two. Only once in 56 matches to date have the two sides failed to get on the scoresheet, with an average of 3.4 goals per game.

VfL’s record this season: 12 wins, five draws and 16 defeats in 33 matches sees coach Florian Kohfeldt’s team 13th in the table on 41 points.

Top ten finish a possibility: The Green-and-Whites were mired in a relegation battle for much of the season, but three wins in their past five matches have seen Kohfeldt’s men mathematically safe. Victory over Bayern could even see them finish as high as tenth in the league.

It’s been a while: This is the first time in over three-and-a-half years that VfL will play Bayern at home with fans in the stands. The last time this was the case was Matchday 8 of the 2018/19 season, when Wolfsburg went down 3-1 at the Volkswagen Arena.
