Frustrating defeat

VfL Women were beaten 3-0 by Eintracht Frankfurt.

VfL Wolfsburg Women endured a tough afternoon on Sunday, losing 3-0 to rivals Eintracht Frankfurt in front of 4,805 spectators at the Stadion am Brentanobad. Both teams had chances in the first half, but Sara Doursoon put the home side in front from the penalty spot following a handball by Marina Hegering shortly before half-time. Frankfurt doubled their lead seconds after the restart through Nicole Anyomi, who completed the scoring in the 59th minute.

The She-Wolves kept going but were unable to find a route back into the match. After two midweek games in succession in late September, they now have a bit more time to rest, recover and fine-tune things on the training pitch. VfL return to action this Friday at the AOK Stadion, when they host RB Leipzig at 18:30 CEST on Matchday 5 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga.

Goals

  • 1-0 Doorsoun (45’+1, pen): Anyomi’s shot strikes Hegering on the arm and referee Dr. Riem Hussain immediately points to the spot. Doorsoun steps up and sidefoots the ball low into the left corner.
  • 2-0 Anyomi (46’): Just 17 seconds into the second half, Laura Freigang wins the ball inside the She-Wolves area and squares it for Anyomi, who finds the net from a central position.
  • 3-0 Anyomi (59’): Eintracht counter at pace and Geraldine Reuteler feeds Anyomi, who finds the left corner with a powerful finish.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “We weren’t as solid today as we have been in recent weeks. On top of that, the game was decided by little details. We weren’t precise enough in attack and, in many aspects, simply weren’t good enough to win a top-of-the-table clash in the Women’s Bundesliga.”
