From Madrid to Wolfsburg

Germany international Turid Knaak signs with VfL Women on a free transfer.

Turid Knaak has signed a contract with the She-Wolves through to 30 June 2023. The 30-year-old is arriving on a free transfer from Spanish club Atletico Madrid, with whom she won the Supercopa – a cup tournament featuring the country’s top four teams – back in January. After Joelle Smits, Lena Lattwein, Tabea Wassmuth, Sandra Starke, Lynn Wilms and Jill Roord, Knaak is the seventh new signing for VfL Women.

Experience in England

Essen-born Knaak made her Women’s Bundesliga debut back in 2007 for FCR 2001 Duisburg, with whom she won the UEFA Women’s Cup in 2009. In total, she has made 225 appearances in the German top flight in a career that has also seen her play for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and SGS Essen. She’s also made 26 appearances in the DFB Cup, a competition she won with Duisburg in 2009 and 2010.

Knaak got her first taste of playing abroad in 2014 when she played four matches on loan at Arsenal Women in the English league. In April 2018, she made her debut for Germany and has gone on to pick up 16 caps for her country.

“Win as many titles as possible”

“I’m delighted to have signed a contract with VfL Wolfsburg – one of the biggest clubs in European women’s football,” Knaak said. “I’d like to be in the hunt for titles with VfL and win as many as possible, and I’m really looking forward to this challenge.”

“A wonderful addition”

"Turid is a player who has had success right from an early age but has continued to develop throughout her career," said Ralf Kellermann, sporting director of VfL Women. "With her incredible experience – for Germany and on the European stage after her time at Atletico Madrid – and her professional attitude, she is a wonderful addition to our squad. I’m delighted that we have managed to persuade Turid to make a return to the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga and that she believes in our philosophy.“
