Frohms takes international retirement

Goalkeeper hangs up the gloves for her country.

Merle Frohms will not be adding to her 52 caps for Germany, after the 29-year-old VfL Wolfsburg goalkeeper informed new national team coach Christian Wück personally that she will no longer be available for selection. Her last appearance therefore came in July in a EURO qualifier away to Iceland.

Almost six years earlier, in October 2018, Frohms made her senior debut for her country in a friendly against Austria. Her greatest success with Germany came in 2022 when they made the final of the European Championships in England, while she also picked up a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“Six unforgettable years”

“I had already decided as far back as the World Cup last year that the Olympic tournament in Paris would be my last for my country,” said Frohms. “I can look back at six eventful and unforgettable years with plenty of highs and lows. Being in goal for Germany at two major tournaments was an honour, but it was also physically and mentally very taxing. I’m now choosing to look to the future, and I’m excited to have more time for friends and family after some intense years where I was competing on two fronts. In footballing terms, I will now be devoting all my energy and focus to VfL Wolfsburg. I would like to wish Germany and coach Christian Wück all the very best and every success at the forthcoming tournaments.”
