Energetic comeback

The She-Wolves rescued a well-earned point late on against Hoffenheim.

After missing out on qualification for the Champions League group stage, VfL Wolfsburg Women responded with a spirited comeback. In the top game on Matchday 5 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga, the She-Wolves fought back from a 2-0 deficit against a ruthlessly efficient TSG Hoffenheim side. It was Alexandra Popp who scored the late equaliser, earning the hosts a deserved point and sparking wild celebrations.

Goals

  • 0-1 Memeti (18’): Michaela Specht plays a good pass behind the VfL defence, which Ereleta Memeti finishes off past Lisa Schmitz to make it 1-0.

  • 0-2 Alber (45’+1): Against the run of play, the visitors strike again at the AOK Stadion. There’s a big slice of luck involved this time, with Dominique Janssen deflecting Mara Alber’s cross into the net.

  • 1-2 Janssen (55’): Following a foul on Popp, Janssen confidently puts away the penalty to reduce the arrears.

  • 2-2 Popp (89’): YEEEES! The TSG defence fail to properly clear a long ball and somehow it bounces in front of Popp, who fires in the equaliser to make it 2-2.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “At the moment we’re having to work very hard to get our reward. As a team, we dealt with the setback of going behind very well and we did the right things. My players deserve huge respect for their fantastic reaction in the second half.“
