Encouragement from reverse fixture

The fact file on the Wolves’ match at home to RB Leipzig on Friday.

VfL Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig will lock horns for the 25th time at the Volkswagen Arena on Friday night (kick-off 20:30 CEST), and for the third time this season. The Wolves proved how best to tackle it in the first encounter of this campaign, as the 5-1 victory in the league in November was the biggest scoreline margin that both sides have experienced this season. More facts and stats on the match against Leipzig:

  • Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men have played two Friday fixtures so far this term – away to Freiburg and at home against Holstein Kiel – and are still waiting for their first win.

  • Overall, VfL are winless in five Friday games (D2, L3), whereas RB are unbeaten in their last four Bundesliga outings on this day of the week (W2, D2).

  • Leipzig have contested more competitive matches at professional level against the Green-and-Whites than against any other club. They’ve not beaten any team more often either, but the 5-1 loss in the reverse fixture was also their biggest home defeat in the top flight.

  • RB travel to Lower Saxony without a win in seven away games, their longest winless streak on the road since 2022 (eight games).

  • The Wolves have lost their last three matches by a score of 1-0, a first in their Bundesliga history.

  • Zsolt Löw claimed his first win as Leipzig head coach last weekend with a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim. To date, only Julian Nagelsmann has managed to win his opening two Bundesliga games as RB boss.

  • Löw was Hasenhüttl’s assistant in Leipzig from 2016 to 2018 – now the pair face each other as rival head coaches for the first time.
