“Done a great job”

The coaches’ assessment of VfL’s 4-1 win at Schalke.

Mission accomplished: the Wolves have qualified for the UEFA Europa League again after an impressive 4-1 win at FC Schalke 04 on the penultimate matchday of the season. Unsurprisingly, VfL head coach Oliver Glasner was a happy and proud man after the final whistle.

Oliver Glasner: “I’m really pleased with how the team played today. It was a very controlled and good performance in the first half with a lot of confidence on the ball and control of the game. We kept threatening going forward and took the lead. It was really a great performance. I’m very, very happy and would like to give the team huge credit for qualifying for the Europa League with one matchday left. The players have put a huge amount of effort in over the season and done a great job, and I’m delighted for the players and the club that we’ve qualified for Europe for the second year in a row.”

David Wagner: “We came up against opponents who are currently on a different level to us, which was evident. Wolfsburg deserved to win. We didn’t start the game well and went behind. After half-time we came out and had a decent spell, during which we could’ve equalised with a big chance for [Daniel] Caligiuri. Then we find ourselves 4-0 down in what felt like five minutes. That shows the difference in energy and quality that we were up against today, particularly in attack. That’s why we lost the game.”
