The VfL Wolfsburg women’s team won their first competitive match of the season in style, running out 11-0 winners against local rivals Hannover 96 in the second round of the DFB Pokal.
The Wolves gave their opponents little chance, with Sara Gunnarsdottir (5’, 42’ pen), Zsanett Jakabfi (11’, 75’) and Ella Masar (37’, 88’) each bagged a brace in front of 1,600 fans at the Eilenriedstadion. Pernille Harder (10’), Katharina Baunach (29’), Alexandra Popp (45’), Caroline Hansen (52’) and Nilla Fischer (55’) also got on the scoresheet.
VfL now go into the last 16, the draw for which will take place on 17/18 November. Meanwhile, Stefan Lerch’s side will look to build on their positive start to the campaign in next Wednesday’s away match against Thor/KA of Iceland in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
“We played well“
Stephan Lerch: It’s a real shame for us that Anna, Sara and even Lena at the end there got injured. Hopefully they’ll be fit again soon but we’ll have to see how the tests go. Otherwise I’m really happy with the performance. The team did really well. We kept the tempo high, put them under pressure and scored some early goals. We played well. It was a useful exercise in assessing the levels of the individual players.
