Defeat in summit meeting

VfL Women slipped off the top of the table following a 1-0 defeat at Bayern Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg Women are no longer the FLYERALARM Women's Bundesliga leaders after conceding a late penalty to lose 1-0 at closest rivals Bayern Munich, who took their place at the league summit.

Bayern now have matters in their own hands in the title race, while the Green-and-Whites must hope they slip up in the season run-in. The She-Wolves have a chance to exact a measure of revenge in three weeks when Germany's top two teams meet again on Saturday 15 April in the DFB Cup semi-finals at the FC Bayern Campus (kick-off 14:00 CEST). An all-German semi-final in the UEFA Women's Champions League is also a possibility, assuming both teams make it through to the last four. VfL face Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their quarter-final on Thursday 30 March (kick-off 18:45 CEST/live on DAZN).

Goal

1-0 Stanway (penalty, 84): Georgia Stanway converts from the penalty spot after a ball from Glodis Viggosdottir struck Lena Lattwein's hand at close range.

Reaction

Alex Popp: "Obviously we planned on the game panning out differently. Overall, we didn't do enough in the first 45 minutes, we were kept very busy at the back and then had problems getting forward because we only had one person up front in Ewa Pajor. We improved in the second half but fell behind due to a frustrating penalty. Now we're second in the table and need to keep working hard to stay on Bayern's heels."
