Commanding win

VfL Women ensured that they finished top of their UWCL group with an 8-2 win away to SKN St. Pölten on a wild night.

VfL Wolfsburg Women finished off their 2022 campaign with an emphatic victory on Thursday evening. In their final UEFA Women’s Champions League group game, head coach Tommy Stroot’s charges cruised to an 8-2 win away to SKN St. Pölten. Lena Lattwein (5’), Marina Hegering (38’) and Svenja Huth (40’) got the goals for the Green-and-Whites in the first half, followed by Ewa Pajor (55’), Tabea Wassmuth (67’), Pia-Sophie Wolter (74’,76’) and Pauline Bremer (85’) in this one-sided contest against the Austrian league champions, with the three points helping to secure top spot in Group B.

The She-Wolves will find out who their next Champions League opponents will be on 10 February when the quarter-final and subsequent semi-final ties are drawn in Nyon. The double-winners will next be in action the weekend before, on Saturday 4 February in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, away to SC Freiburg (kick-off: 14:00 CET).

Reaction

VfL assistant coach Sabrina Eckhoff: “We’re obviously very pleased with this. We scored eight goals and made sure we finished top of the group, which was our aim before the match. When you get an early goal like we did tonight, it makes the game so much easier. And while I know that the girls will be annoyed about the two goals they let in, they did really well tonight.”
