VfL Wolfsburg Women recorded a 5-0 home win over RB Leipzig on Friday evening in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga Matchday 5 opener. The Green-and-Whites seized control from kick-off and held a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to Lynn Wilms’ strike (21’).
Leipzig enjoyed their best period early in the second half but the She-Wolves managed to keep them at arm’s length. VfL added to the scoreline in the 65th minute through Sveindis Jonsdottir, with Lineth Beerensteyn (76’) making it 3-0 a short while later. Rebecka Blomqvist scored her first goal since making her comeback from a cruciate ligament injury in the closing stages (84’) before Beerensteyn rounded out the win with her second of the game (90’).
Goals
1-0 Wilms (21’): Wilms smashes an unstoppable strike into the net from the edge of the area.
2-0 Jonsdottir (65’): Janina Minge finds Alex Popp with a superb ball forward. She squares it to Jonsdottir, who makes no mistake.
3-0 Beerensteyn (76’): Jonsdottir, on the left, plays the ball inside to Beerensteyn. She skips past Leipzig’s Julia Landenberger and then nutmegs goalkeeper Elvira Herzog.
4-0 Blomqvist (84’): A wonderful pass from Sarai Linder sends Blomqvist clean through to make it 4-0.
5-0 Beerensteyn (90’): Popp finds Beerensteyn, who outfoxes Herzog and tucks away VfL’s fifth.
Reaction
Tommy Stroot: “We played very well in the first half and were particularly strong in the tackle. That allowed us to create good moments in transition. We also managed to find the right spaces when we had possession, we created chances and had some set pieces. We did a lot of the things we set out to do. We had more space in the second half and that’s how we managed to get this result. Overall, I’m very satisfied.”
