Champions sign off in style

VfL Women end their league campaign with a 5-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

The VfL Wolfsburg Women recorded the 20th victory of their FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga campaign, seeing off Bayer 04 Leverkusen 5-0 on the final day of the season. The She-Wolves, who had already secured the title 11 days ago, took the points thanks to goals from Zsanett Jakabfi, Alexandra Popp, Fridolina Rolfö, Ingrid Engen and Pernille Harder, to end 2019/20 undefeated in the league.

Let the celebrations begin

Immediately after the final whistle, Harder was given the award for the league’s top scorer after hitting 27 goals this season, the second time she has received the honour after 2017/18. The She-Wolves were then presented with the championship trophy, cuing wild celebrations as the Meisterschale remained in Wolfsburg for another year. The only thing missing was the fans…

“It shows the players’ mentality”

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “Today’s match summed up the entire season. We kept the tempo high from the very first minute against an opponent who sat deep. We never eased up and we kept on playing, even when the score was 2-0 or 3-0. That just goes to show the players’ mentality. They’re always hungry, regardless of the scoreline. I’m very proud of what the team showed out on the pitch once again today.”
