DFB Cup holders VfL Wolfsburg Women are through to the last 16 of this season’s competition after beating second-division outfit FSV Gütersloh 2009 8-2 on the Tönnies Arena’s artificial pitch. The resounding win was the She-Wolves’ 41st consecutive victory in the cup.
VfL fell behind early on but cruised to a comfortable second-round triumph thanks to four goals from Alexandra Popp and further strikes from Jill Roord, Dominique Janssen, Lynn Wilms and Ewa Pajor. This season, all Bundesliga clubs were given a first-round bye.
The She-Wolves are back in action at the AOK Stadion at 13:00 CEST on Saturday 17 September, when they host SGS Essen in their first home match of the new FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga campaign.
Reaction
Tommy Stroot: “It was a typical DFB Cup game against a very bold second-division side. Gütersloh touched a nerve with their early opener in a period in which, due to the recent international break, it was impossible for us to be at our rhythm. But we grew into the game more after that and deserved the win in the end.”
