Women

Champions League century for She-Wolves

VfL Wolfsburg Women are eager to mark their 100th UEFA Women’s Champions League outing with a win when they host Galatasaray at the AOK Stadion on Wednesday evening.

After recording a 5-0 win at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, VfL Women are going for another victory when they welcome Galatasaray to the AOK Stadion on Wednesday 20 November (kick-off 18:45 CET). The Green-and-Whites need three more points in order to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.

At his pre-match press conference, head coach Tommy Stroot spoke about...

…personnel: “Camilla Küver, Caitlin Dijkstra, Luca Papp and Kristin Demann will all be absent.”

…potentially rotating his line-up: “As a general rule, that always depends on what you’ve done previously. One or two players will come back in. Janina Minge played in the closing stages against Potsdam. I can say that I firmly believe she’ll be in the starting line-up this time. We know that having such a huge amount of quality in our squad is one of the big advantages we have at VfL Wolfsburg. We always look to make the most of it.”

…matches against supposedly easier opponents: “We’re considered favourites in lots of our games now. That’s not how I view it, though, and neither do our players, because we’re still in a process and want to develop stability for the entire squad. Our focus is on performing in these busy weeks with midweek fixtures. In particular, that means not underestimating any opponent, and we certainly won’t underestimate Galatasaray.”

…VfL’s 100th Champions League appearance: “It’s a very, very special milestone. There aren’t many teams who have reached it. It just goes to show how VfL Wolfsburg have shaped women’s football in recent years.”
