Brekalo returns

The Croatian midfielder ends his loan stay in Stuttgart.

The VfL Wolfsburg squad takes a boost during the winter break with the addition of a familiar face: Initially on loan at VfB Stuttgart until the summer of 2018, Josip Brekalo returns to the Wolves prematurely and will begin preparations with Martin Schmidt’s team for the second half of the season on January 2nd, 2018. The Croatian made the move from Dinamo Zagreb to VfL Wolfsburg in 2016, signing on with the Green-Whites until 2021. Having made four Bundesliga appearances for the Wolves, the 19 year old made a loan move to then second division VfB Stuttgart in January 2017. At VfB, the winger made eleven second division appearances (one goal) and played eleven games (one goal) in the top-flight.

"Matured as a footballer and a person"

"Josip has developed well in Stuttgart, which is what we had hoped for in agreeing on the loan-transfer. He got some more match practice with VfB and has since matured as a footballer and a person. We are now delighted about his early return. We now hope he can take his next step with us and increase the quality and variability within our squad," commented VfL Sporting director Olaf Rebbe.
