Almuth Schult set to become a mother

The VfL Wolfsburg Women goalkeeper, 28, is due to give birth in the New Year.

VfL Wolfsburg and Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult will not return to action for quite some time. The 28-year-old, who is currently recovering from a shoulder operation, is set to become a mother next year.

The 2016 Olympic gold medal winner’s last competitive match was for the national team in the 2019 Women’s World Cup quarter-final against Sweden on 29 June. Schult, who is under contract with VfL until 2022, intends to continue her career after her maternity leave, saying: “My aim is to return to the pitch”.

“New, exciting chapter”

Ralf Kellermann, VfL Women’s sporting director, added: “We’re all very pleased for Almuth and her husband and already wish them all the best for this new, exciting chapter in their lives.”

Schult has made 178 competitive appearances for VfL since joining the club from SC 07 Bad Neuenahr in 2013, winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League (2014), four German league titles and five DFB Cups.
