Following friendly wins over the Veltins-Selection (8-1) and KSV Baunatal (7-0), on Friday evening, VfL Wolfsburg went on to win the third friendly game of the 2018/2019 pre-season preparations - although this time around there were fewer goals to celebrate. In the Wolfsburg city derby against ‘Regionalliga’ (fourth division) new-boys U.S.I. Lupo Martini Wolfsburg, the Green-Whites ran out eventual 3-0 (1-0) victors. The goals for VfL coach Bruno Labbadia’s side were scored by Wout Weghorst (28’), Josip Brekalo (83’) and Admir Mehmedi (85’). And the next test for the Wolves looms. On Thursday, July 19th, VfL take on English second-flight club Norwich City, with former Wolves defender Timm Klose, in Barsinghausen (kick-off 18:00 CEST).
"Great practice"
VfL head coach Bruno Labbadia: "That was really great practice for us and we played the game in very organised fashion. Naturally, the lads lacked that final step, considering the tough training programme we’ve been through in the past week. In the first-half, our opponents participated more in the game and we then had more attacking openings. In the second-half, they were more tightly packed – almost in their own penalty-area. But that’s great practice for us too. When we did manage to get through and go deep into the spaces, we immediately made it 2-0. With the training session on Saturday, we will then mark the end of what has been an intensive week.
