Wolves remain winless at home

Despite taking the lead, VfL suffered a 4-2 defeat against Bremen.

VfL Wolfsburg lost 4-2 at home to SV Werder Bremen in the final Bundesliga Matchday 7 fixture of the weekend. Tiago Tomas’ strike in the 19th minute gave the hosts the lead, only for Bremen to equalise through Mitchell Weiser in first-half stoppage time (45’+5).

The visitors completed the turnaround after the interval thanks to goals from Felix Agu (51’) and Marvin Ducksch (67’), and an eventful second half was made even worse from a VfL perspective when Patrick Wimmer was sent off (68’).

Werder made the most of their extra man and went 4-1 up through Marco Grüll (72’). Joakim Maehle, on as a substitute, pulled a goal back for the Green-and-Whites (79’) but it was not enough to prevent defeat and leave the Wolves still searching for their first home win of the season.

Goals

  • 1-0 Tiago Tomas (19’): Goalkeeper Michael Zetterer misses the ball completely as he comes to collect a corner. Denis Vavro’s effort from just inside the six-yard box is blocked but Tiago Tomas bundles it over the line from close range with his heel.

  • 1-1 Mitchell Weiser (45’+5): Marvin Ducksch crosses from the left into the penalty area and Weiser reacts quicker than the VfL defence, leaving Kamil Grabara no chance with a close-range volley.

  • 1-2 Felix Agu (51’): So frustrating! Grabara makes a brilliant save to deny Grüll but the rebound falls to Agu, who places the ball under the VfL goalkeeper to put the visitors 2-1 up.

  • 1-3 Marvin Ducksch (67’): The Wolves are caught out on the break. Weiser crosses into the box from the right and finds Ducksch, who volleys the ball into the bottom-left corner from near the penalty spot.

  • 1-4 Marco Grüll (72’): Ducksch floats a cross from the left in for Grüll, whose shot takes a deflection off Yannick Gerhardt and lands in the net.

  • 2:4 Joakim Maehle (79’): Just 60 seconds after coming off the bench, Maehle dribbles forward in a central area and places a shot into the right-hand corner.

Reaction

Ralph Hasenhüttl: “We’re very, very disappointed because we weren’t able to kill off a game like that in the first half. After ten minutes we had a good grip on the game, we won the ball well and we created chances, but we conceded the equaliser ten seconds before half-time. In the second half we completely lost our way in terms of wanting to defend aggressively from the front. A lot of things didn’t work out for us, the opposition made life very, very tough and kept punishing us. Then when we had a man sent off, it was game over. It’s a huge shame because we undid a lot of the good things we’ve done over the last few weeks. We’re extremely disappointed.”

Ole Werner: “I’m totally satisfied with our performance – and of course with the result. We started the game well and created some dangerous situations right from kick-off. We became a little bit sloppy after that. Wolfsburg grew into the game and took the lead. It was important for us that we managed to pull a goal back before half-time - that was really important mentally. In the second half we played the way we’d set out to do. We took things up a notch both in terms of our quality and the precision of our play. We played some really good football. That’s why I’m very pleased with this game.”
