Wolves attack bolstered by new recruit

U-21 international Lukas Nmecha joins on season-long loan from Manchester City.

VfL Wolfsburg have added another player to their squad with the arrival of centre forward Lukas Nmecha, who is joining the Green-and-Whites on a season-long loan from English Premier League champions Manchester City. The 20-year-old, who has joint German and English nationality, has been given the number 22 jersey. Nmecha is a right-footed forward who can also play on the wing, and made steady progress through the various England age group teams, winning the Euro U-19s in 2017 and scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Portugal in the final. At the beginning of this year, the Hamburg-born youngster opted to change allegiances and play for Germany, and since then has made four appearances for the U-21s, including in the final of the Euro U-21s in Italy this summer. "Lukas is a young and hungry player who fits in perfectly with the philosophy at our club both on and off the pitch," said VfL director of sport Marcel Schäfer. "He put in some good performances in the English second tier and in U-21 internationals last season and certainly caught the eye. We’re delighted that the next stage of his career is going to be with us."

The attacker was also loaned out by Man City last season to Preston North End, playing 41 championship matches and notching up four goals and eight assists. Prior to that, he had made his debut for Manchester City’s first team in the League Cup quarter-final in December 2017 under coach Pep Guardiola. The following season, Nmecha made two brief appearances in the Premier League for the reigning champions. "It had been my aim to play in the Bundesliga and in my home country for some time now," said Nmecha. "I’m particularly pleased that this move to VfL Wolfsburg has come off because everything is in place for me here to further my development at the highest level and to realise my full potential.“
