Popp unstoppable, Blomqvist birthday

VfL-Wolfsburg-Spielerin Popp trifft bei der WM für die deutsche Nationalmannschaft.

She-Wolves victorious: The ten VfL members in Germany’s FIFA Women’s World Cup squad enjoyed a 6-0 opening victory over Morocco at the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. In Jule Brand, Merle Frohms, Kathrin Hendrich, Svenja Huth, Alexandra Popp and Felicitas Rauch, six Green-and-Whites were in the starting line-up, with Popp scoring twice in the first half to pave the way for victory in Group H. Chantal Hagel and Lena Lattwein came on in the second half to play their first minutes at the tournament. Injured VfL duo Marina Hegering and Lena Oberdorf did not feature. Germany are next in action on 30 July (kick-off 11:30 CEST) when they face Colombia in Sydney.

Other She-Wolves also celebrated winning starts to the tournament in Groups E and G. Dominique Janssen, Lynn Wilms and summer signing Caitlin Dijkstra, who will be loaned to FC Twente in the coming season, were part of a Netherlands side that beat Portugal 1-0. They will meet reigning world champions USA in their next game on Thursday 27 July (kick-off 03:00 CEST).

Elsewhere, Rebecka Blomqvist helped Sweden pick up their first three points with a 2-1 success over South Africa. They go up against Italy next on Saturday 29 July (09:30 CEST).

Happy Birthday: Blomqvist enjoyed an early present yesterday with Sweden’s victory over South Africa, before celebrating her 26th birthday today. Grattis på födelsedagen – happy birthday!
