Winning start in England

The VfL Wolfsburg development squad beat Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in their opening game of the Premier League International Cup.

VfL Wolfsburg's development squad made a dream start to this season's Premier League International Cup with a 4-0 win against Athletic Bilbao's U23 side. Two goals from Jesaja Herrmann (16', 39') and a penalty from Paul Seguin (45'+2) gave the Wolves a 3-0 lead at half-time in Aldershot, with Gian-Luca Itter adding a fourth goal in second-half stoppage time. The competition continues for the Green-Whites on Monday 3 December against Tottenham Hotspur U23s.

The only disappointment during an otherwise successful outing in England came before kick-off. Centre-back Jeffrey Bruma, one of six first-teamers in the squad, picked up an injury during the warm-up and was replaced in the starting line-up by Dominik Franke.

"I'm very pleased"

VfL coach Ton Lokhoff: "Obviously a 4-0 win is very pleasing. You never know beforehand what to expect. The team only came together on Monday and have clicked straight away after two training sessions. When you have a mix of players from the first team, U23s and U19s, you have to look at how it all fits together. I told the players they had to play as a team and they did that. We defended well against a good side and scored four goals, so I'm very pleased."
