Wimmer and Müller shine in win

The Wolves held off a late surge away to SV Werder Bremen to return home with a 2-1 victory.

VfL Wolfsburg once again demonstrated their impressive away form on Bundesliga Matchday 24, with a 2-1 triumph at SV Werder Bremen marking the team’s seventh victory on the road this term. Patrick Wimmer played a leading role in the win with an early goal in each half, while goalkeeper Marius Müller made a number of saves to preserve all three points.

Late Bremen consolation

The hosts ensured there would be a nail-biting conclusion when Mitchell Weiser reduced the deficit, but the Wolves held firm to claim an important victory in Bremen.

Goals

  • 0-1 Wimmer (6’): There’s the opener! Andreas Skov Olsen delivers a corner from the right into the six-yard box, where Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer misses the ball in a big crowd of players. Wimmer takes full advantage and bundles it over the line.

  • 0-2 Wimmer (48’): Another quick goal at the start of the half, and it’s Wimmer again. The Austrian attacker receives the ball from Mohamed Amoura on the left, drives forward unchallenged and smashes an effort at goal from 25 yards out. It takes a deflection off Milos Veljkovic and flies into the net at a speed of over 100 km/h.

  • 1-2 Weiser (90’): Werder pull one back to make for a nervy ending. Keke Topp fizzes a cross into the box and Jens Stage lays it off for Weiser, who fires into the top corner.

Reaction

Ralph Hasenhüttl: “That wasn’t our best away game but it’s a good quality to have to be able to win games like that. Being able to win tight matches is definitely one of our qualities this season. It was important to take the lead. That usually helps you to manage the game in a calmer way, even if that wasn’t the case today.”

Ole Werner: “I think we played well overall. After the goals we conceded, you could tell that the team has had a tough time in recent weeks. We kept going until the final whistle and had the better chances over the course of the game, but we just didn’t make the most of them. That was decisive today.”
