“We’re proud of you”

Reaction and congratulations following the end of the She-Wolves’ season.

VfL Wolfsburg Women narrowly missed out on the UEFA Women’s Champions League title on Saturday with a 3-2 defeat to FC Barcelona in the final. It’s nevertheless been a very successful season for the She-Wolves: as well as being runners-up in the Champions League, VfL Women won the DFB Cup for the 10th time. The team therefore received several messages of congratulations for their achievements in the 2022/23 campaign.

Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen AG: “The Champions League is the elite level of football, and you made it to the final. A phenomenal achievement – for VfL Wolfsburg, for the Volkswagen Group and for football in Germany. Of course we all would’ve liked the title – and it would’ve been deserved. You’ve been a true team across the whole season. Passionate, technically strong, fair and always hungry for more success. On behalf of the whole Volkswagen team: many thanks for what you’ve achieved. I’m super proud of you. Next season we’ll go again!”

Frank Witter, chairman of the supervisory board of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH: “Obviously you always want to win a final. Our brilliant VfL Women were very close to it against a top Barcelona side, and even though the dream of the Champions League title fell through this year, with a bit of time that will be outweighed by the joy of a successful season. We can look back on what’s been achieved with great pride and go into the new season with confidence. On behalf of the whole supervisory board of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH, I warmly congratulate head coach Tommy Stroot and the team as well as everyone involved for this performance.”

Marcel Schäfer, managing director of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH: “This final defeat still hurts and the disappointment will last for a few days. However, what our VfL Women have achieved this year fills us with tremendous pride. The team and the team behind the team worked towards this final with so much heart and soul, enthusiasm and discipline that it deserves the highest praise. It’s been an excellent season in all three competitions, with us winning the DFB Cup for the ninth year in a row. We will come out of this season even more united, even closer together and attack again next year.”

Dennis Weilmann, mayor of the City of Wolfsburg: “Our She-Wolves have had another excellent season, and the narrow defeat in the Champions League final doesn’t change that. We’re very proud that such a wonderful team represents Wolfsburg across Europe. On behalf of the city council and administration, I congratulate VfL on this great campaign. This success, this consistency are the result of hard work. For that I take my hat off and that’s also why we gave the She-Wolves a fitting celebration on the town hall square yesterday.”
