“We’re growing closer”

VfL Women host TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Sunday.

After the disappointing Champions League play-off exit in midweek, VfL Wolfsburg Women turn their focus back on the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga this weekend. The She-Wolves head into Matchday 5 with a two-point lead at the top of the table – an advantage they will look to build on against closest pursuers TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at 14:00 CEST on Sunday 22 October.

Before the meeting with Hoffenheim, VfL head coach Tommy Stroot answered the media’s questions on…

… personnel: “Camilla Küver, Tabea Sellner, Rebecka Blomqvist, Sveindis Jonsdottir and Merle Frohms are all still out.”

… the atmosphere in the camp: “It’s our responsibility to bring a certain energy and conviction onto the pitch against Hoffenheim on Sunday. Generally speaking, you get the feeling from all our players that we’re growing closer as a group ever since that [UWCL] setback. I’ve seen an extremely tight-knit side who practically treat each other like family. We can draw strength from that for the challenges that lie ahead.”

… lessons from the Paris game: “We need to play a simpler game. It’s not about being easy on the eye but about being efficient and getting the right result. It’ll be a new situation for us after the Bayern game [on 5 November], after which we’ll have more time to train. We want to use that to stabilise our patterns of play and keep consolidating certain things.”

… the opponents: “Hoffenheim’s game is very flexible and adaptable, particularly in attack. Our job is to find different solutions for that and stop our opponents with the right energy in front of our own fans. It’s a top-of-the-table encounter in the Women’s Bundesliga against top-level opponents in all areas. We have to be aware of that. They’re a team who will definitely be competing for a top-three spot at least.”
