“We need to put our chances away”

Patrick Wimmer gave his thoughts ahead of the home game against Leipzig.

With Saturday’s game against Champions League participants Leipzig just around the corner, VfL midfielder Patrick Wimmer took time out for a short interview.

Patrick Wimmer, the team produced the first disappointing performance of the year last time out. Having had time to digest it now, what are your thoughts on the draw at Schalke?

Patrick Wimmer: “I think every footballer in Germany knows how difficult it is to play at Schalke. We had some problems with our man-marking in defence, and weren’t able to find solutions like we managed to in previous weeks. But we’ve worked on that and are now only looking forwards.”

What lessons can you learn from games like that?

Patrick: “You could see that we need to go fully focused into every game. It’s become clear that things won’t just happen by themselves and that every opponent is tough in this league.”

Another tricky team is coming to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday. What are you expecting from Leipzig?

Patrick: “A team that wants to play football, no question. But in my opinion that suits us. In our game against Bayern you could see that we had good moments where we put some moves together and were dangerous on the counter. Now we need to do better. We need to be compact, keep our lines closer together and put our chances away up front.”

It certainly won’t be easy to break through Leipzig’s defence, but the same goes for our backline as well. We just need to find our own game, then we’ll get chances to score.

Like Wolfsburg, Leipzig have only conceded 26 goals this season. As such, this game has the makings of a hard-fought battle.

Patrick: “When you put it like that, yes. But you have to say that both teams are up there in terms of most goals scored, too. It certainly won’t be easy to break through Leipzig’s defence, but the same goes for our backline as well. We just need to find our own game, then we’ll get chances to score.”
