“We have a lot of fun”

VfL’s latest signing Lukas Nmecha chats about his first few days in Wolfsburg.

After being presented at the VfL Family Fun Day last weekend, Wolves’ new signing Lukas Nmecha has just completed his first week of training with his new teammates in Wolfsburg. The Germany U21 international left his native Hamburg at the age of just nine and emigrated with his family to England.

He has played for Manchester City ever since, save for a loan spell at Preston North End, but now he’s joined the Green-Whites on loan. In this short interview, the striker talks about his return to Germany and his first impressions of the Wolves.

Lukas, can you tell us how you’ve found your new teammates and the training during your first few days at VfL?

Lukas Nmecha: “I’ve received a very good and friendly welcome from everybody. Training is certainly hard but I’m also enjoying it a lot. The team have good character and we have a lot of fun with each other, but when it comes to training everyone is fully focused and takes it seriously.”

You moved from Germany to Great Britain at the age of nine. Is it now a big change for you to come back?

Lukas: “I visited Hamburg very frequently during my years in England, so I won’t have any difficulties acclimatising. I feel at home here. It’s also nice that I’ve already found a place to stay here in Wolfsburg, which obviously makes it easier for me to concentrate fully on training.”

You said during your unveiling that you wanted to make the step to the Bundesliga. What’s your motivation behind that?

Lukas: “There have been a few young players in recent years, such as Jadon Sancho [at Borussia Dortmund] and Reiss Nelson [at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim], who have made the move from England to Germany and been given the opportunity to play and develop. What’s more, because I’m German, it’s probably easier for me than going to Spain, for example, or another country.”

You didn’t have many options left, but does the number 22 shirt hold any significance for you?

Lukas: “Not yet, it just looks cool (laughs).”
