VfL Wolfsburg Women earned a 4-1 victory at MSV Duisburg on Matchday 19 of the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga thanks to a flurry of late goals.
As 1. FC Köln had beaten SC Freiburg earlier on Sunday afternoon, Duisburg were confirmed as the first relegated team of the season prior to kick-off. However, that did not stop the Zebras producing a determined first-half display in which they competed well against a VfL side that missed a number of good chances to take the lead, leaving the match goalless at the interval.
After the break, the hosts broke the deadlock somewhat surprisingly, before Alexandra Popp struck the equaliser (71’) that ultimately paved the way for the Green-and-Whites’ victory. Dominique Janssen converted from the penalty spot to put the She-Wolves in front, while quickfire goals from Vivien Endemann and Ewa Pajor sealed the points.
VfL now have just under two weeks until their next match – a home fixture against Köln on Friday 3 May at the AOK Stadion (kick-off 18:30 CEST) – as the season enters the final straight, with three league games and the DFB Cup final on the agenda in May.
