After nine league games unbeaten, the Wolves suffered an unfortunate 2-1 defeat at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Matchday 24. Christoph Baumgartner (8’) and Andrej Kramaric (41’) scored the goals for TSG, either side of Wout Weghorst’s momentary equaliser (23’). Oliver Glasner’s side couldn’t find a way back in the second half and also finished the game with 10 men after Paulo Otavio’s dismissal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Casteels finally beaten

Glasner kept faith with the side that started at Leipzig in the cup in midweek, but they fell behind after just eight minutes, when Baumgartner was left unmarked from Pavel Kaderabek’s cross and hammered the ball past Koen Casteels. The Green-and-Whites, for their part, struggled to string things together in attack, allowing the hosts to gain the initiative in the match.

From one goal-getter to another

That was the case until the 23rd minute, when Xaver Schlager played in Weghorst with a brilliant pass, and the Wolves striker slotted the ball past Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann to make it 1-1. It was the Dutchman’s 15th goal of the season and also ended a four-game drought. But Glasner’s charges did not make the most of their opportunities in the subsequent period and conceded in the middle of their spell of pressure. Kaderabek whipped in another cross from the right flank and although Ihlas Bebou missed it at first, Kramaric was lurking at the far post and had little trouble putting the home side back in front shortly before half-time.
