Women

The top five moments of 2024

The year in review for VfL Women.

An 11th DFB Cup triumph, reaching the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals and the 100th appearance on the European stage were just some of the many highlights for VfL Women in 2024. Here is our top five:

Tenth cup win in a row:

An incredible 9-0 thrashing of SGS Essen in the semi-final at the end of March propelled VfL Women into their tenth consecutive DFB Cup final, which would be played on 9 May in front of a capacity crowd at Cologne’s Rhein-Energie Stadium. The She-Wolves put in a strong performance and fully deserved their 2-0 win, which secured their tenth cup triumph in a row and 11th overall. Jule Brand (14’) and Dominique Janssen (40’) were the scorers.

Champions League qualification:

As was the case the previous year, VfL Women came second in the league in the 2023/24 season which meant that they entered the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the second qualifying round. When the draw was made in early September, Fiorentina were the opponents, with the She-Wolves winning the first leg in Italy 7-0 on 18 September. The return leg at the AOK Stadion also went the way of VfL Women, 5-0 this time, and after their disappointing elimination at this stage in the 2023/24 season, this win sealed the She-Wolves’ return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

2-0 home win over Bayern:

12 October heralded the first marquee match-up of the new Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga season for VfL Women when they faced FC Bayern Munich in the Volkswagen Arena in front of a crowd of 17,152. Goals from Vivien Endemann (5’) and Linneth Beerensteyn (67’) secured a memorable 2-0 victory.

100th Champions League match:

Istanbul side Galatasaray came to Wolfsburg in November for Matchday 4 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. As well as being crucial in terms of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the competition, this was a special night for the She-Wolves, who made their 100th appearance on the biggest of European stages. VfL Wolfsburg became the third club to pass this landmark in women’s football, with only Olympique Lyonnais (148) and Arsenal WFC (119) playing more matches.

Reaching the UWCL quarter-finals:

The She-Wolves certainly had their work cut out in the UEFA Women’s Champions League when they found themselves drawn in Group A with Olympique Lyonnais, AS Roma and Galatasaray. After an agonising 1-0 defeat in Rome and a 2-0 loss to Lyon, the Green-and-Whites saw off Galatasaray convincingly at home and away. December came around, with everything resting on the return clash at home to Roma. Goals from Alex Popp (6’), Beerensteyn (65’) and Sveindis Jonsdottir (68’, 85’, 88’, 90’+2) saw Tommy Stroot’s team cruise home 6-1 and book their spot in the quarter-finals, which will be played in March 2025.
