VfL Wolfsburg Women’s astonishing DFB Cup run continued on Thursday afternoon as a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the final handed the record winners a tenth consecutive cup success, simultaneously ending Bayern’s hopes of doing the double.
The result marked a 50th straight win in the competition for Tommy Stroot’s side, and the club’s 11th cup triumph overall. This year’s achievement was all the more remarkable given that the She-Wolves did not concede a single goal en route to lifting the trophy.
The 44,000 spectators at the sold-out Rhein-Energie-Stadion in Cologne bore witness to an impressive first-half display from the Green-and-Whites, with goals from Jule Brand (14’) and Dominique Janssen (40’) setting the course for victory.
Bayern pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but Stroot’s charges held firm through a combination of team spirit, a willingness to battle, and resolute defending to see the 2-0 scoreline to the final whistle.
Goals
- 1-0 Brand (14’): Yesssssss! Lena Oberdorf lays the ball off to Brand, who takes aim from the left. The ball bounces in front of Bayern goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs, who misjudges its trajectory – giving VfL the opener!
- 2-0 Janssen (40’): The She-Wolves are awarded a corner following a counter-attack. Svenja Huth delivers the ball from the left high into the box and finds Janssen, who buries an unstoppable header into the net.
