Sustainability as strategic guiding principle

VfL Wolfsburg has published its seventh sustainability report.

VfL Wolfsburg published its seventh sustainability report, entitled ‘Wir fĂŒr morgen’ (‘Us for tomorrow’), on Thursday. The latest report provides a comprehensive overview of the club’s key environmental activities over the past two years, as well as its future goals. The report covers the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons and sets out how VfL Wolfsburg strategically addresses key sustainability issues in the areas of ecology, social affairs and economics. As well as successes and milestones, challenges and potential for improvement are also openly communicated by the club in a 360° appraisal.

Sustainability in the club’s DNA

Sustainability is deeply rooted in VfL Wolfsburg’s corporate strategy. The club is committed to integrity, equal opportunities, a fair working culture and sustainable supply chains, which includes promoting the transformation of small farmers in India to organic cotton farmers through the ‘Vom Feld in den Fanshop’ (‘From the pitch to the fan shop’) initiative.

New 360° environmental strategy

The club has also adopted decisive measures for the good of the environment. As laid out in its 360° environmental strategy published in 2024, VfL Wolfsburg is focusing on efficient energy use, resource-conserving catering practices and climate-friendly mobility concepts. As a pioneer in environmental protection strategies, the club is installing microplastic filters at the VfL academy and at Elsterweg, while also using microplastic-free infill material for new artificial pitches.

Social responsibility and a clear stance

VfL Wolfsburg sees itself not only as a football club, but as a social driving force that stands for an open and tolerant society. “We’re currently experiencing a shift to the right in Germany, which goes hand in hand with intolerance, exclusion and misanthropy,” VfL managing director Michael Meeske says in the foreword of the sustainability report. “For us, these inhumane, increasingly right-wing populist and right-wing extremist attitudes and actions have no place in football or in society.”

‘We’ means standing together and working together to shape a worthwhile today and tomorrow. Through this report, we not only want to highlight our progress but also invite fans, our partners and society to be proactive in their support for a sustainable future.

Diversity at the stadium and in society

The club is actively involved in promoting inclusion and diversity, both on and off the pitch. VfL Wolfsburg is committed to education, integration and democratic values, with projects such as the ‘GrĂŒn-Weißes Klassenzimmer’ (‘Green-and-White classroom’) and the Diversity Matchday. Moreover, matchday commentary for visually impaired supporters is being expanded to further improve accessibility at the stadium.

Together for a sustainable future

The sustainability report ‘Wir fĂŒr morgen’ (‘Us for tomorrow’) highlights the fact that environmental action at VfL Wolfsburg is seen as a joint task. “‘We’ means standing together and working together to shape a worthwhile today and tomorrow,” says Meeske. “Through this report, we not only want to highlight our progress but also invite fans, our partners and society to be proactive in their support for a sustainable future.”
