Special shirt for diversity campaign

The VfL Wolfsburg men's and women's teams will sport a special-edition jersey.

During the '2019 Diversity Weeks', VfL Wolfsburg and Volkswagen will send out a clear message against discrimination thanks to a special-edition shirt to be worn by both the men's and women's teams. The latter side donned the new jersey, which features the hashtag ‘#Vielfalt’ (Diversity) printed in rainbow colours, for the first time on 13 March in their DFB Cup quarter-final match against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam.

The men's team will do the same in their upcoming Bundesliga match at home to Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CET). "Sport, and football in particular, forms a vital component of Volkswagen's social activities, and tolerance and diversity are important aspects of that," said Hiltrud Werner, a member of the Volkswagen AG Board for Integrity and Rights.

VfL organises the Diversity Weeks in conjunction with the City of Wolfsburg Fan Project. This year, in addition to the special shirt, a FIFA 19 tournament for refugee teams will take place on 13 March, in cooperation with the Volkswagen Refugee Support Initiative and the group's works council. Strategic workshops on the topics of homophobia and sexism in football (in cooperation with the City of Wolfsburg Fan Project) will also be held.

The campaign was kicked off on 3 March when 65 of VfL's partner clubs joined the initiative to use rainbow-coloured captain's armbands, meaning more than 650 teams in various leagues throughout Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt will now use them in future.
