She-Wolves with double in their sights

VfL Women eagerly anticipating Saturday’s DFB Cup final against Essen

The VfL Wolfsburg Women are looking to close out the 2019/20 season by doing the double, when they face SGS Essen in the DFB Cup final in Cologne on Saturday 4 July (kick-off 16:45 CEST). Having already won the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga title, the six-time DFB Cup winners go into the encounter against the 2014 cup runners-up at the RheinEnergieStadion looking to make history, as no club has ever won six successive cup finals. 30 consecutive victories would also be a new competition record.

The She-Wolves have been in Cologne since Thursday, and prior to Friday’s final training session on the RheinEnergieStadion pitch, VfL head coach Stephan Lerch and captain Alexandra Popp addressed the media at the official pre-match press conference.

Lerch gave his thoughts on…

…the squad: “Everyone who’s here is available to play. Unfortunately Sara Gunnarsdottir and Kristine Minde are no longer around for this huge match, which is a great pity.”

…playing behind closed doors: “It’s just a real shame that the emotions in the stands won’t be there this year. That means that it’s now down to the players even more so to generate emotions on the pitch and to create the feeling that it’s a big game. The DFB Cup final in Cologne is always a highlight and something special – particularly this year given the circumstances. We want to crown our impressive season and win a second trophy.”

…playing against future recruit Lena Oberdorf: “We won’t only be keeping an eye out for Lena tomorrow, even if we do know all about her physical presence and we’ll certainly need to take that into account. There’s a lot of quality in Essen’s squad, especially in attack. We want to control the game by playing dominant football and doing everything we can to implement our playing style. If we can do that then I’m very optimistic that we’ll come put on top at the end of the day.”
