The draw for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League in Nyon (Switzerland) on Friday lunchtime has pitted VfL Wolfsburg Women against FC Barcelona. The first leg on 18 or 19 March will take place in front of a bumper crowd at the Volkswagen Arena, before the She-Wolves travel to Spain for the return leg on 26 or 27 March.
Reunited with defending champions
Barcelona reached the last eight as Group D winners after triumphing in five of their six matches in the section, with their only defeat coming at Manchester City (2-0). The She-Wolves last faced the Catalan giants in the 2022/23 Champions League final in June 2023, when they raced into a 2-0 half-time lead before slipping to a 3-2 defeat. In the semi-finals 12 months earlier, VfL suffered a 5-1 first-leg reverse in front of a remarkable 91,648 fans at Camp Nou, which all but confirmed their elimination from the competition. The Green-and-Whites were able to claw back some pride in the return leg, however, winning 2-0 in front of their own supporters.
The sides’ latest tussle in Wolfsburg is set to be particularly special, as it is the first time VfL will come face to face with former She-Wolf Ewa Pajor since she left the club for Barcelona last summer.
