She-Wolves set for sunny training camp

VfL Women are gearing up for the reminder of the season in Portugal.

The winter break is over for VfL Wolfsburg Women, who held their first training session of the year at Elsterweg on Wednesday morning. In the afternoon, the coaching team, backroom staff and 31 players headed off to Almancil in Portugal, where they will follow an intensive 10-day training programme.

Big player pool available

After undergoing performance tests on Sunday, the Green-and-Whites trained together for the first time on Wednesday in a 90-minute session. Head coach Tommy Stroot had the majority of his squad available to him, although Sarai Linder was among the absentees due to the ankle injury she sustained shortly before the winter break. “We won’t rush her as we get her back to fitness,” said Stroot, who will adopt a similar approach with Kristin Demann and Camilla Küver.
Meanwhile, Rebecka Blomqvist has stayed in Wolfsburg for the time being. “She’s ill at the moment so that’s why she hasn’t come with us,” said the coach. “But she’ll join up with us in the next few days.”

Everyone else on the playing staff is fit and healthy, including 17-year-old attacker Maja Zielinska from the U20s, who has joined the first team on their camp in Portugal. “She was with us a lot during our summer preparations too,” said Stroot.

Training focal points

The camp will also feature a friendly against FC Twente on Monday 13 January (kick-off 14:00 CET) in a match with four 25-minute quarters. That will be followed by an 11-against-11 training game towards the end of the week.

“It’s important to us that all of the players get a certain amount of playing time in order to show what they can do,” added the She-Wolves boss.

The camp’s focus in training will be on build-up play and breaking down the opposition. “That’s something that we haven’t been able to work on at all yet given all of our midweek games,” explained Stroot, who will use the time in the Portuguese Algarve to do just that.

Dining with the men’s team

Before being put through their paces in Almancil, the She-Wolves will have dinner with the men’s team on Wednesday evening, as they did last year.

“It’s always very, very special to spend a couple of days with the men,” said Stroot. “It underlines the way the club works together. We’re really looking forward to some days in the sun and working hard.”
