“Shakhtar deserved to win”

VfL head coach Oliver Glasner reacts to his side’s 3-0 defeat away to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Wolves struggled to break down Shakhtar for long spells at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, only managing to put the hosts under pressure in bursts. The Ukrainians were clinical in the closing stages, striking three times late on to progress to the next round.

Glasner: “Shakhtar were a bit better and a bit more mature over the two legs. We set out to do a lot of things, and the boys kept plugging away. With the score at 0-0 when they were reduced to ten men, we had a small window when we could have turned the tide our way. We should have made the most of our chances at free-kicks and our extra man against such a strong team. At the end we lacked a bit of belief and we got tired. Shakhtar deserved to win, and we’ll learn our lessons from these two games.”
