The 30th season of the Women’s Bundesliga, which became the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga at the start of 2019/20, has drawn to a close. For the sixth time overall, and for the fourth time in succession, VfL Wolfsburg ended the campaign as champions.
There were wild scenes of rejoicing following the 5-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the final day, as the She-Wolves celebrated lifting the championship shield once again. They could get their hands on yet more silverware when they take on SGS Essen in the DFB Cup final on Saturday 4 July (kick-off 16:45 CEST), but VfL’s 2019/20 campaign is already guaranteed a place in the history books - and not just due to current circumstances caused by the coronavirus crisis. On the pitch, the Green-and-Whites continue to set the bar.
Facts and figures on the 2019/20 Bundesliga season
VfL’s sixth league title has lifted them into joint second place in the all-time table, alongside 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. 1. FFC Frankfurt remain record champions with seven titles to their name.
The She-Wolves and Potsdam also hold the joint record for most consecutive title wins. Turbine claimed four back-to-back titles between 2009 and 2012, while VfL have not relinquished the championship shield since 2017.
VfL fell just shy of the all-time Bundesliga points record this term. Frankfurt collected 63 of a possible 66 points in 2004/05, while the Green-and-Whites ended the 2019/20 campaign on 62 points - beating their previous record haul of 59.
While Frankfurt suffered one defeat in 2004/05, the She-Wolves did not lose a single game this season. The last team to go an entire league campaign unbeaten were FC Bayern Munich, who registered five draws in 2014/15.
VfL averaged over four goals a game this season, scoring 93 times in 22 matches. Frankfurt were the last team to score as many goals (103 in 2011), although they failed to get their hands on the title nine years ago.
At the other end, VfL’s defence was breached on just eight occasions. The She-Wolves conceded just four times in 2014/15 but still had to make do with second place.
Pernille Harder ended the 2019/20 campaign as the league’s top scorer (27 goals). The last player to register more league goals in a single season was Inka Grings, who netted 28 in 2009/10. This is the third time in a row that a Wolfsburg player has finished as top scorer, with Harder (17) and Ewa Pajor (24) getting their hands on the coveted award in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
