Schult sidelined

The VfL Ladies goalkeeper undergoes surgery on her shoulder.

VfL Wolfsburg will have to do without Almuth Schult for the start of the 2019/20 season after the Germany goalkeeper had an operation on her right shoulder in Munich on Tuesday. How long the five-time German champions will be missing the 28-year-old depends on the healing process. In spite of her shoulder injury, Schult started between the sticks in all of Germany’s matches at the Women’s World Cup in France and did not concede a goal until their 2-1 quarter-final defeat against Sweden.

Operation required

After extensive medical examinations, it was decided that surgery was the only way for Schult to be completely free of pain again. “It’s a great shame that Almuth will miss the start of the season,” said Ralf Kellermann, VfL Ladies sporting director. “She proved again only recently at the World Cup that she’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We’ll support her through the rehabilitation period as best we can and hope that she can return to the pitch soon.”
