Women

Positive result on the Thames

VfL Women drew 3-3 with Chelsea in their first UWCL group match.

VfL Wolfsburg Women can be more than satisfied with their start to this season’s reformed UEFA Women’s Champions League, having held much-fancied English champions Chelsea to a 3-3 draw away from home.

A Tabea Waßmuth brace and another strike by Jill Roord earned the two-time UWCL winners a share of the spoils in front of 1,371 spectators in the London borough of Kingston upon Thames. Tommy Stroot’s side had led until the 92nd minute, when they conceded a late equaliser following a defensive error.

Wednesday’s other Group A game saw Juventus ease to a 3-0 win against Swiss UWCL debutants Servette, who visit the She-Wolves on Wednesday 13 October (kick-off 18:45 CEST).

The Green-and-Whites are back in Bundesliga action on Sunday 10 October (kick-0ff 16:00 CEST) when they welcome promoted side 1. FC Köln to the AOK Stadion.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: Overall it’s a point gained for us, which we’re proud of, but when you concede the equalise two minutes before the end, it also gives you a different perspective. The way we played pleased me, though. It was a team display and we gladly take the point back with us.
