Popp extends deal

Germany international striker Alexandra Popp has extended her contract with the VfL Wolfsburg Ladies until 2022.

Popp is the latest star to pledge her long-term future to the VfL women’s team after extending her contract with the She-Wolves by a further three seasons. Her original deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, but the 27-year-old has now committed to the club until 30 June 2022. “Alexandra has not only given great service to VfL Wolfsburg, she’s also an integral part of our future plans,” said VfL Ladies’ sporting director Ralf Kellermann. “We’re delighted she’s staying with us.”

Major contribution

Since joining VfL from FCR Duisburg at the start of the 2012/13 campaign, Popp has played a crucial role in a remarkable period of success for the Green-Whites that shows no sign of abating. The two-time German Women’s Footballer of the Year has helped the club win 11 titles overall, having been part of the side that won the treble in 2013, the Bundesliga and UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2014, back-to-back domestic doubles in 2017 and 2018 as well as two further DFB Cups. She has scored 92 goals in 181 competitive appearances for VfL, while netting 44 times in 91 outings for the German national team.

“There’s no reason to leave”

“I’m really pleased that the club continues to rely on me,” said Popp. “It’s great fun to be part of this team and to fight for further titles together. That’s why there’s no reason for me to leave here.”

Popp’s team-mates Lara Dickenmann and Claudia Neto signed extended deals with the VfL Ladies last month, tying them to the club until 2021 and 2020 respectively.
