“Nothing happens on its own”

Niko Kovac ahead of the Matchday 17 trip to Hertha BSC.

After Saturday’s 6-0 home win over SC Freiburg, the in-form Wolves travel to Hertha BSC on Tuesday 24 January (kick-off 20:30 CET) brimming with confidence. While VfL are eyeing the European places, the Berlin outfit are second-bottom in the table having fallen below expectations this season. At the pre-match press conference, Wolves head coach Niko Kovac answered the media’s questions on…

… personnel: “Paulo Otavio is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card. Felix Nmecha is also unavailable because of a hardened muscle in his thigh – we don’t want to take any risks there.”

… VfL’s opponents: “Berlin’s position in 17th doesn’t reflect the ability they’ve already shown this season. They had a few games in which they were unfortunate to draw or lose. We’re taking the game very seriously and will focus 100 per cent on the task at hand.”

… current form: “Everything we’ve achieved so far we’ve had to work hard for. We went through a difficult time and now we’re on the rise, but things can change very quickly in football – particularly when you think everything happens on its own. Football is a sport you can’t predict.”

… recent performances: “The team are playing the way I want them to. We’re satisfied with the improvement but we don’t want to stand still. We have to work harder and do even more because opponents are adapting to us now, which means we have to keep finding new solutions.”
