VfL Women continue to press ahead with their recruitment plans after completing their first signing for the 2025/26 season. Having already agreed contract extensions with Lena Lattwein, Alexandra Popp, Svenja Huth and Janina Minge, the She-Wolves have now secured the services of 23-year-old Australia international Sharn Freier, who has put pen to paper on a deal until 30 June 2028. Freier, who currently plays for Brisbane Roar in the Australian top flight, has won ten international caps since making her debut for the Matildas in 2024. The forward, who is usually deployed on the left flank, was part of the Australia squad at last summer’s Olympic football tournament in France, with her only appearance coming in a 3-0 defeat to Germany. She also featured in a 2-1 friendly win over the same opponents last October.
“Pride and gratitude”
“I’m already looking forward to joining VfL Wolfsburg and I’m excited about the prospect of playing in a league outside Australia for the first time,” said Freier. “To be able to play for such a successful club with so many great players fills me with pride and gratitude. I can’t wait to take on this new challenge and meet my future team-mates. I’m also looking forward to learning a new language and experiencing German culture.”
“A fast attacking player”
Ralf Kellermann, director of women’s football at VfL Wolfsburg, added: “Sharn has international experience and has been performing at a consistent level for club and country for many months now. She’s ready to make the step to a top European league and we’re very happy we were able to bring Sharn to VfL. Her qualities as a fast attacking player will help us from day one, but she also has plenty of room for improvement. We can look forward to a player who not only has great pace but a likeable personality, and who has everything she needs to settle in her new environment as quickly as possible.”
