Long lay-off

Pia-Sophie Wolter suffered a cruciate ligament tear in the match against Köln.

Pia-Sophie Wolter has joined teammates Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp on VfL Women’s long-term injury list. The midfielder tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee in the 88th minute of yesterday’s 3-0 win at home to 1. FC Köln, having come on as a substitute in the 62nd minute. The 23-year-old, who has made six appearances in all competitions this season, will be operated on by knee specialist Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Frosch in Hamburg in the coming days.

“A bitter blow”

This diagnosis is a bitter blow for us, and first and foremost for Pia herself, of course,” said sporting director Ralf Kellermann. “She’s taken another step forward this season and has been an important component of our attack with her energy and flexibility. After Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp, it’s another long-term absence that we’ve got to take on the chin and make up for as best we can. I still have great confidence in our squad and I’m sure we’ll overcome this challenge collectively.”
