League to start on 18 September

DFB outlines schedule for 2020/21 season with shortened winter break.

The German Football Association (DFB) presented the new overall schedule for the 2020/21 season on Friday. The reorganisation of the fixture list, which was based on the option favoured by the majority of clubs, was necessary because the 2019/20 campaign lasted longer than originally planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

First matchday of 2021 on 2-3 January

The new Bundesliga season will therefore start later than originally planned, and there will also be a significantly shorter winter break as well as three rounds of midweek fixtures. The league will kick off with Matchday 1 on Friday 18 September, with the first round of the DFB Cup taking place a week earlier (11–14 September). The final Bundesliga matchday of 2020 will be Matchday 13 from 18 to 21 December, and before the brief Christmas break, most clubs will be involved in the second round of the cup on 22/23 December. It will then be back to business already on 2 or 3 January 2021 with Matchday 14, while the league comes to a close with Matchday 34 on 22 May. The DFB Cup final is scheduled for Thursday 13 May.

Another important piece of information for Wolves fans is that the second round of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League will take place on Thursday 17 September. The third round is set for Thursday 24 September, and the play-offs on Thursday 1 October. All three qualifiers will be played as single matches, and the Europa League group stage will then commence on Thursday 22 October.
