Great news from the Lady-Wolves training-camp: Icelandic international 'Female Footballer of the Year' Sara Björk Gunnarsdottir has committed to VfL for the long haul. The Green-White’s midfielder has extended her current contract with last season’s double-winners for a further year, until summer 2020. "Sara settled in with us here very quickly and was a vitally important pillar of the team right from the outset. Thanks to her style of play and her presence on the pitch, she has very quickly developed into a true leader, so I am absolutely delighted that she has signed an early extension to her contract," explained Ralf Kellermann, Sporting director of women’s football at VfL.

Gunnarsdottir linked up with the Lady-Wolves in summer 2016, moving from top Swedish side FC Rosengard – with whom she had previously won four championship titles. The 27-year-old immediately enjoyed great success in Wolfsburg, playing an important role in the Green-Whites claiming the domestic league and cup double in her first season at the club. "Sara is one of our absolute leaders. She covers a great deal of ground for the team in every game and is always convincing with her exceptional qualities, her tacking and her aerial strength. It’s an important sign for the club and the team, that we have convinced such a talented individual to continue on the road we have taken with us," commented VfL coach Stephan Lerch.
Gunnarsdottir was also delighted about her early contract extension. "I am very happy to be able to extend my deal with VfL. I am playing here in the best league, with the best players and under exceptional conditions. That way, I can develop further as a player. I am delighted to continue helping the team to achieve our lofty goals," said the Icelandic international.
The Green-Whites thus continue their successful route of continuity, having previously secured premature contract extensions with four other Lady-Wolves, in Lena Goeßling (2019), Pernille Harder, Noelle Maritz and Ewa Pajor (all until 2020).
