Late equaliser

Amoura rescues point for dominant Wolves against FC Augsburg.

VfL Wolfsburg’s wait for a first home league win of the 2024/25 season goes on. In fact, the Wolves, who were dominant for long spells but too toothless against an effective Augsburg side, were on the brink of defeat until Mohammed Amoura made it 1-1 late on with a powerful strike.

Match summary

With over 70 percent possession, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men were the dominant team against Augsburg but fell behind in the 34th minute through Philipp Tietz. And 1-0 was how it stayed for a long time at the Volkswagen Arena.

The Green-and-Whites came out with more tempo and drive in the second half but genuine chances remained hard to come by. Tiago Tomas poked the ball narrowly wide on the hour mark, before Joakim Maehle was denied by FCA goalkeeper Nediljko Labrovic after a mistake by Chrislain Matsima (72’). Just before that, Augsburg offered a rare threat in the form of substitute Samuel Essende (70’) as the visitors increasingly sat back and defended. The Wolves kept pushing and were finally rewarded in the 82nd minute, when Amoura hammered the ball home from Maehle’s lay-off to level the score.

Goals

  • 0-1 Tietz (34’): The visitors take the lead against the run of play. Keven Schlotterbeck’s long ball forward causes confusion on the edge of the Wolfsburg box between Kamil Grabara and Denis Vavro, and Tietz takes advantage, rounding the VfL goalkeeper and rolling the ball into the empty net.

  • 1-1 Amoura (82’): There’s the equaliser at last! A cross from the right is flicked on to Maehle at the far post. Instead of hastily going for goal, the Danish international lays it back to Amoura, who thumps it into the top-right corner.

Reactions

Ralph Hasenhüttl: “After winning at home in the DFB Cup on Tuesday, we really wanted to follow that with a first home win in the Bundesliga this season too. We weren’t able to do that, so obviously we’re not happy. We knew what to expect against Augsburg. The boys stayed patient, put in a huge amount of effort and hardly gave the opposition a chance, apart from the opportunity they scored from. We went behind out of the blue despite controlling the game. We were able to get behind their defence at regular intervals but just lacked that last creative spark.”

Jess Thorup: “After losing three away games and conceding a lot of goals, it was important for us to pick up at least a point today. Having said that, I could tell the players were disappointed in the changing room. We tried to be well organised for the full 90 minutes when we didn’t have the ball, and we didn’t allow them to create many clear-cut chances. In the second half we defended the result too much and forgot to play football.”
