VfL Wolfsburg can continue to rely on the services of Koen Casteels in the coming years after the goalkeeper signed an extension to his contract, which was due to expire in 2021.

“I’m delighted to be able to continue along the path we’re on at VfL, and to play my part in furthering the positive development of the team in the coming years,” said the Belgium international. “My family and I have long felt at home in Wolfsburg, so extending my contract here was the most logical decision for me.”
Jörg Schmadtke, Managing Director of Sport, believes the deal is an important step in setting the course for the club’s future: “Koen has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world at VfL, and his quality and character are a huge support and a role model for the whole team. With him and our other goalkeepers, we’re very well stocked in this position.”
Debut in Supercup success
Casteels arrived at VfL from TSG Hoffenheim in January 2015 but was loaned to Werder Bremen until the summer that year. He made his competitive debut for the Wolves on 1 August 2015 in a 5-4 penalty shootout triumph over Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup at the Volkswagen Arena, where he saved a spot-kick from Xabi Alonso. Since then, the 27-year-old has made 99 Bundesliga appearances for the Green-and-Whites, as well as ten in the DFB Cup, two in the UEFA Champions League and one in the UEFA Europa League.
