Women

Hungry for number nine

VfL Women are aiming to make history with a DFB Cup final victory over Potsdam.

Just two weeks after receiving the league championship trophy, VfL Wolfsburg Women are determined to seal the double and win an eighth successive DFB Cup title: on Saturday 28 May (kick-off 16:45 CEST, live on ARD and Sky), the She-Wolves face 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam in the final in Cologne. If VfL emerge victorious and lift the trophy for a ninth time, they will equal 1. FFC Frankfurt’s record of cup triumphs. The Green-and-Whites already hold the best mark for most consecutive DFB Cup successes. VfL travelled to Cologne on Thursday – continuing the team’s tradition of arriving two days before the matchday - to prepare for the decider, which is the their 39th and last competitive game of the season. On Friday the players participated in their final training session at the RheinEnergieStadion, which took place after the official pre-match press conference where head coach Tommy Stroot discussed…

…team news: “Apart from Pia-Sophie Wolter, everyone else is available, which is fantastic at the end of such an intensive season. Obviously that doesn’t mean that everyone can play, because we’re restricted by the squad limits.”

… his objectives: “We want to win the game and another title. That’s our priority, but the same goes for both teams. Potsdam will also be going into the match wanting to win it. We’ll give it everything we’ve got but we know how tough it’ll be.”

…his expectations: “I can understand that people expect us to win, especially in light of our winning sequence in this competition. But we know all too well just how difficult it is and what you need to do if you want to consistently achieve your aims. I think part of our recipe for success is that we keep our feet on the ground, we start from scratch every time so that we give everything again.”

…the atmosphere inside the stadium: “It might be a little advantage for us to play in a big stadium. We played at some big venues in the Champions League this season. A lot of our players are already familiar with the RheinEnergieStadion and have good memories of it from the last few years.
